Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder |
YF-5000.1700-050 |
A neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development, has symptoms presenting in two or more settings (e.g. at home, school, or work; with friends or relatives; in other activities), and negatively impacts directly on social, academic or occupational functioning. Children with ADHD have difficulty focusing (picking something on which to pay attention), sustaining focus (paying attention for as long as is needed), and shifting focus (moving attention from one thing to another); tend to fidget, talk excessively or be constantly "on the go"; and speak and act on impulse rather than waiting their turn. Symptoms typically worsen in situations like the classroom that require sustained focus and self-application, and may be absent when the child is in a new or one-to-one situation. In the adult form of ADHD, the symptoms associated with hyperactivity may diminish while those related to inattention and impulsiveness persist. Adult symptoms may include lack of attention to detail, inability to maintain focus, poor listening skills, disorganization, forgetfulness, misplacing or losing things, being overwhelmed by tasks of daily living, difficulty sustaining friendships or intimate relationships, impulsive spending habits, restlessness, irritability, low tolerance for frustration, emotional outbursts and poor self esteem. There is no single test to diagnose ADHD, and many other problems, like sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and certain types of learning disabilities, can have similar symptoms. |

Children attend two 30-minute sessions per day for a 10- to 12-day period and listen through headphones to music that has been altered by a filtering apparatus to emphasize some tones and reduce the intensity of others. The treatment is modified to suit individual needs as determined by special auditory testing. The technique was developed by Dr. Guy Berard, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) in Annecy, France. It is used primarily for individuals with autism spectrum disorders but on occasion it has been used to treat people with behavioral disorders and other types of disabilities. Also included are other types of AIT such as Tomatis, The Listening Program and Integrated Listening Systems (iLs). |

Depending on when the hearing loss occurs relative to acquisition of speech and/or language, speech/language support services provided by a speech and language pathologist (SLP) may be recommended. For adults, aural rehabilitation services focus on adjusting to the hearing loss, making the best use of hearing aids, exploring assistive devices that might help, managing conversations and taking charge of communication. Services can be individual, in small groups, or a combination of both. Services for children focus on training in auditory perception, using visual cues, improving speech, developing language, managing communication and using hearing aids and assistive listening devices. They are offered in the context of early intervention (ages birth-3) and school services (ages 3-21) through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, according to individual needs and the communication mode the child is using. |

When partnered with a child, autism service dogs can help to ensure the child's safety by preventing or alerting parents to wandering or bolting behavior and tracking a child who succeeds in escaping; improve management of difficult behaviors such as seizures or tantrums; increase impulse control; facilitate sensory integration and calming; provide companionship and socialization support; and improve the child's ability to function in public. |

Autism Spectrum Disorder |
YF-1800.0400 |
A developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior, and includes symptoms that impair the individual's ability to function properly in school, work and other areas of life. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a "developmental disorder" because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. Autism is also known as a "spectrum" disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. People with ASD have difficulty with social communication and interaction (e.g. lack of eye contact, voice tones that sound sing-song or robotic, facial expressions or gestures that don't match what is being said), restricted interests (e.g., intense interest in numbers, details, facts), restrictive/repetitive behavior (e.g., repeating words or phrases, getting upset at changes in routine or sensory input such as light or noise). People with ASD may also experience sleep problems or irritability, but also have many strengths including the ability to learn things in detail and remember information for long periods of time; being strong visual and auditory learners; and excelling in math, science, music or art. But although ASD can be a lifelong disorder and while children who have ASD have difficulty in talking, playing with other children, and relating to others, including their own family, treatment and services can improve their symptoms and ability to function. |

Included are behavioral and communication development approaches, specialized curricula and sensory integration; biomedical and dietary treatments including psychiatric medications, vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin B6, magnesium and essential fatty acids), treatment using the hormone secretin and special diets; and various complementary therapies such as music, art or equestrian, speech, physical or occupational which may be used on an individual basis or integrated into an educational program. |

FN-1700.1470-028 |
Programs that provide a hotline, website or other mechanisms that people can use to report calls from scammers posing as representatives of a car dealer, manufacturer or insurer telling them that their auto warranty or insurance is about to expire. The call generally includes some sort of pitch urging them to renew their warranty or policy. During the call (which often begins automated or pre-recorded) they may be instructed to press a certain number or stay on the line, and then asked to provide personal information which potentially can be used to defraud them. The scammer may have specific information about the intended victim's car and warranty which can make it hard to discern whether a particular call is legitimate or fraudulent. Car owners are advised against providing any personal information, such as their Social Security number, credit card information, driver's license number or bank account information to any caller unless they can verify they are dealing directly with a legitimate company with which they have an established business relationship. Criminals may also engage in caller ID "spoofing" – deliberately falsifying the information transmitted to the person's Caller ID display to disguise their identity. In addition to being fraudulent in nature, these calls likely violate telemarketing and robocall rules. People who have received a suspected scam call can file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov or both. |
