Individuals who preside over the sales of consignment goods, property, livestock and other items at events where such goods are sold to the highest bidder. They inspect goods for auction and may estimate their value, group items together in lots and plan the selling order, display goods for purchasers to view before the auction, look for bidding signals, call for bids, sell goods to the highest bidder (subject to a reserve price) and keep a record of sales. Auctioneers may also arrange for insurance on goods; select the place and date for the auction; arrange advertising, catalogs and financing; and provide information to prospective buyers about the goods to be sold.
