At Aloha United Way (AUW) we believe in a future where our keiki are secure, families are financially stable, and communities thrive. We advocate for a healthier, more educated, and financially stable Hawaii. The 2024 AUW Advocacy and Public Policy Agenda can be organized in the following areas: Support for the economic stability of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households, support for community members experiencing disaster or crisis with the Safety Net, and support for our local nonprofit organizations.

Administers the Occupational Safety and Health Law and the Boiler and Elevator Safety Law. Conducts investigations of workplace catastrophes or fatalities and employee complaints regarding workplace hazards. Provides consultation to employers and training to employers and employees to encourage voluntary compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Law standards and rules. Inspects boilers, pressure systems, amusement rides, elevators and similar equipment.

Referrals to attorneys in private attorneys in 14 major categories of law and over 80 sub categories. (Domestic, civil suit, criminal, immigration, civil rights, etc.) Bilingual attorneys are available.

(Domestic Violence Advocacy) Families who are enrolled in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Temporary Assistance to Other Needy Families (more commonly known as “welfare”), are required to be engaged in activities that will ultimately lead them to self-sufficiency. Program recipients for whom issues of safety and domestic violence are interfering with their progress can call upon Domestic Violence Advocacy to help them find support to change their situations. Services include: assessment, service planning, counseling services, case management and linkage and referral. Provides client advocacy for women referred by Department of Human Services (DHS) in need of case management and support to leave domestic violent relationships. Six month time period given to provide victims the opportunity to gain focus and perspective of their personal goals and career choice.

Experiential summer program, school credits recovery, case management and support for youth at risk or suspended from school.

Maintains information resources, i.e. books, magazines, musical recordings, video and audio tapes, State and County government documents and Hawaiiana materials. Provides fax service to send messages to State legislators. Provides access to wi-fi and telephone reference service. Voter registration forms also available.

The National Safe Haven Alliance (NSHA) is a national non-profit organization that promotes safe alternatives for parents in crisis pregnancy situations in every state. The 24 hour crisis help and text line provides support and direction for parents and providers regarding the Safe Haven law, including Safe Surrender locations, adoption resources and parenting support. The National Safe Haven Alliance also can provide direct resources to assist and prevent infant abandonment. The Crisis Hotline is staffed 24 Hours by social workers, nurses, and paramedics that have received comprehensive training and are able to support and assist parents and providers. The number is a helpline and text line.

(HCNP, Nutrition Program - Hawaii County, Meals on Wheels) Nutrition Sites provide morning activities and lunches in congregate settings for seniors, 60 years old or older. Meals on Wheels are available for seniors, 60 years old or older, who are homebound due to illness or disability. Provides a variety of ocean activity programs for all ages including ocean awareness, learn to swim (in the ocean), volleyball and water sports. Teaches ocean safety. Maintains a list of surf meets.

Temporary 24-hour care for older adults of all ethnicities to offer care providers an opportunity to take a break from the rigors of care giving responsibilities. Respite Care is provided on a first-come, space-available basis. There is no guarantee that a bed may be reserved for a specific timeframe. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan provides a line for members to get medical advice from a registered nurse or other medical personnel. All Kaiser plan members affected by the Kona Low on March 2026 can call to get help with advice and medication.

Provides an informal youth program, designed to assist youth in acquiring knowledge and life skills, and becoming self-directed, productive and contributing members of society. Through active, experimental learning, youth learn about science, communication, personal management, leadership, citizenship, health, safety, and nutrition. Members participate in citizenship projects, literacy program using television; "GHOSTWRITERS"; "KAMP" (Kindergartners Are Most Precious) designed to promote school readiness, success and parent-child interaction; and a "Youth At Risk" educational theater project.

Provides counseling services to juveniles who are at risk and beyond parental control. Refers client to professional agencies and therapist if needed.

Enhances the lives of homeless children on the islands of Hawai'i and Oahu. We are a non-profit organization run 100% by volunteers.
