Organized in 1979, the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society (HPGS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of Hawaii’s older adults. We promote the understanding of the aging process, supportive services, and legislation that help people age with dignity and grace. It is the largest voluntary, multidisciplinary group in the State committed to dialogue and discussion, networking and information sharing on issues and policies affecting older adults in this geographical area. Currently, more than 400 older adults, caregivers, gerontology educators, medical and social service practitioners, health care providers, agency personnel and organizations from all sectors of the community make up the membership. Members can attend the meetings held three times a year.

Kula Kamaliʻi Preschool Through the school’s exclusive Hakalama literacy method keiki learn to speak ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language) within three to four months and often graduate with advanced reading and writing skills. Keiki also develop social, intellectual, leadership and perceptual motor skills through classroom lessons, field trips, cultural activities, performance opportunities and community service. Applications for the 2021-2022 school year are still being accepted based on availability, priority application period for the 2022-2023 school year is November 1st through March 1st. Hale Kipa ʻŌiwi ‘Aha Pūnana Leo has become a nationally recognized model for Native American language revitalization, and a resource for indigenous groups interested in reviving and perpetuating their traditional languages by providing assistance to develop language and cultural revitalization programs.

(ABC) Attachment Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) Program - an evidenced-based intervention for caregivers of infants and toddlers who have experienced early adversity. The ABC Parent-Child Attachment Specialist, known more informally as the ABC Parent Coach, is able to provide intervention for infants between 6 and 24 months of age and toddlers between 24 and 48 months. A weekly homeless outreach ministry fundamentally based around food distribution, gospel proclamation, and life transformation. We offer groceries, a hot meal, and haircuts. Occasionally, we also offer showers, and aides signing up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). (Hoala Hou - High Risk Reduction) Provides prevention services to youth ages 10-17. Department staff utilizes Best Practice or Evidence Based prevention curriculums to educate youths and parents on the dangers of substance abuse/use. We continue to provide on-going substance free activities at various schools statewide and partner with other local agencies. The department also works to develop a variety of prevention curriculum, incorporating Hawaiian values, culture, and practices.
