(Puuhonua Prison Program - Pre/Post-Release Assistance to Oahu Offenders, Pu'uhonua Prison Program - Pre/Post-Release Assistance to Oahu Offenders) Puuhonua Prison Program helps incarcerated men and women navigate through the challenges of re-entering society, which includes avoiding homelessness, becoming rehabilitated, securing employment, and avoiding recidivism. Program participants receive help obtaining MedQUEST health insurance, SNAP/financial assistance, Goodwill clothing vouchers, bus passes, and referrals to shelter/housing resources and prospective employers. Puuhonua staff meet with offenders on-site at Oahu’s correctional facilities and also provide support post-release. Welcomes and accepts volunteers (including high school students, college students, working adults and senior retirees). Volunteers assist Health System employees with acute care, long-term care and geriatric care. Duties range from clerical support to companionship activities within nursing home residents or patient assistance at the medical center. Volunteers also participate in hospital tours for visitors. Volunteers are accepted year round. Upon acceptance into the program, volunteers attend a general orientation given by the supervisor of their assigned department. Most volunteers work one to two times a week and a minimum of three hours a shift. Weekends are available.

Gregory House Programs's Save the FoodBasket program delivers food to those who are house bound or in rural areas and distributes groceries at a rented space in a centrally located church. Information on the distribution location available upon the completion of a referral. All recipients get an equal amount of frozen meats, produce, dairy, and non-perishable goods. Hot lunches are available twice a week. Other services include limited toiletries and cleaning supplies, nutrition classes, and nutrition counseling.

Ohana Makamae offers Domestic Violence Intervention through our Batterer's Intervention Program (BIP).  This service is for individuals who are perpetrators of domestic violence.  Our aim is to help clients achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles that promote growth, balance and wellness; and to provide a safe place where they can gain understanding and knowledge into their behaviors.  Through our  Batterer's Intervention Program our clients can meet their obligations to the courts and become empowered to make right choices.Our BIP program utilizes the “Alternate Behavior Choices” (ABC) curriculum; a research-based domestic violence curriculum by John Hamel, PhD, LCSW. The Alternate Behavior Choices curriculum is appropriate for both voluntary and court-mandated individuals, and exceeds the legal requirements for batterer intervention programs in Hawaii.

The purpose of the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is to enable eligible families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. Kauai County Housing Agency's (KCHA) FSS program is the conduit between the client and the appropriate supportive services necessary to achieve independence. FSS case managers are assigned to FSS participants to make a proper assessment of strengths, needs and aspirations. The case manger will guide each client through a service plan which outlines short and long-term goals. Some of the services provided to families include: child care, transportation necessary to receive services, remedial education, job training and preparation, substance abuse treatment and counseling, training in homemaking and parenting skills, training in money management, training in household management; and any other services and resources appropriate to assist eligible families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides crucial food and nutritional support to qualifying low-income and needy households, and those making the transition from welfare to self-sufficiency.
