For youth who have run away or experienced a crisis. The program is geared to help youth work out their problems and whenever possible keep the family unit intact. Family counseling is an important part of their stay. Parental consent is necessary unless the youth is referred by Child Protective Services. The Emergency Shelter Services Program is geared to help youth work out their problems while keeping the family unit intact with the help of regular family counseling. The length of stay typically ranges from 1 to 30 days and are offered in two settings, Group Shelters and Kamala Homes. There is one shelter for boys and one shelter for girls.

(Homeless Careavan Program) Provides outreach for homeless individuals. Currently uses van, Care-A-Van outreach specialist to travel to beaches/parks and other areas on Kauai where homeless people live or congregate. Air Fare interisland and mainland - for patients not covered by other insurance coverage. Reduced rate lodging - at hotels in Hawaii for patients who must travel for treatment. Hope lodge - free overnight housing for patients traveling to the mainland for treatment.

Serves current and former foster youth in Hawai‘i who are transitioning out of the foster care system, into adulthood. (Help Understanding and Group Support Respite Program) HUGS schedules respite services for enrolled HUGS member families who meet medical eligibility requirements. Volunteers are needed.

Provides education in women and child health, chronic diseases, etc. Facilitates access to health care. Conducts screening tests and source/contact investigations on tuberculosis (TB) cases. Provides health services in public schools, consultation services to private schools, day care, and residential care homes. Provides basic dental health services.

Develops and disseminates educational materials. Maintains database, and maintains extensive listing of organization referrals related to diabetes.

(Domestic Violence Advocacy) Families who are enrolled in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Temporary Assistance to Other Needy Families (more commonly known as “welfare”), are required to be engaged in activities that will ultimately lead them to self-sufficiency. Program recipients for whom issues of safety and domestic violence are interfering with their progress can call upon Domestic Violence Advocacy to help them find support to change their situations. Services include: assessment, service planning, counseling services, case management and linkage and referral. Provides client advocacy for women referred by Department of Human Services (DHS) in need of case management and support to leave domestic violent relationships. Six month time period given to provide victims the opportunity to gain focus and perspective of their personal goals and career choice.
