Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Temporary Assistance for Other Needy

(TANF, TAONF) The federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program provides temporary cash assistance to eligible families. The monthly cash assistance given to families may be used to pay for food, clothing, housing and utility expenses, and other daily needs. Eligible families include at least one specified relative adult and a minor dependent child who resides in the same home. In addition, family members must be US citizens. The State of Hawaii Temporary Assistance for Other Needy Families (TAONF) Program provides the same benefits and services to Hawaii’s vulnerable families with children as the TANF program. The TAONF program eligibility includes mixed citizens and non-citizens, and single- and two-parent households. (Domestic Abuse Shelters and Transitional Apartments - Oahu) Domestic Abuse Shelters provide a safe haven for those fleeing domestic violence. Program accepts abused partners and their children. A 24 hour hotline is available for referrals and resource information. The Domestic Abuse Shelters (DAS) offers up to 120 days of a safe haven, basic needs (food, clothing etc.), counseling and services for children. Program participants learn dynamics of domestic violence, develop safety plans, improve self-esteem and learn healthy parenting skills. Children develop safety plans and learn they’re not responsible for domestic violence. Basically the same as Alcoholics Anonymous' 12 step program. We substitute food for alcohol. We are a free walk-in program for people with various kinds of food disorders. We provide a safe place to discuss these issues, and teach the 12 step solution. No one member is in charge. We have no dues or fees. We have a secretary who leads the meetings and this position is cycled usually every three months.

Specialists support parents in helping their child develop in the following areas: COMMUNICATION: talking | understanding COGNITIVE: paying attention | solving problems PHYSICAL: sitting | walking | picking up small object SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL: playing with others | having confidence ADAPTIVE: eating | dressing self Family centered care principles guide providers in supporting the child and family. Services are provided within the child's daily routines and activities. A primary service provider and coaching model is used to teach parents and/or primary care givers strategies to support the child's development.

Maui Strong

The Maui Strong program delivers bagged groceries and essential supplies to kupuna who were displaced or otherwise impacted by the Maui wildfires. Deliveries are made directly to their homes by volunteer drivers. For safety and privacy, drivers do not enter the kupuna’s homes. In addition to home deliveries, the program provides care navigation services to help connect kupuna with resources and support. We also offer transportation services for those who need transportation to medical appointments or essential errands.

Computer Coding and Robotics Program

The Computer Coding program utilizes the on-line Scratch application that was developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Lab. Students learn basic coding skills to create their own computer games. Students also learn the use of Adobe Photoshop to create logo designs for their games, animation, digital art and graphic designs. Robotics utilize the Scratch application and children learn to work as teams to create and maneuver their robots.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The HUD Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly the Section 8 Program) is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program.
