Taxonomy: Podcasting Web Services

Online technology tools that make it possible for Internet users to upload and/or access podcasts, i.e., prerecorded audio or video digital-media files that are distributed over the Internet by syndicated download through Web feeds enabling people to listen to them on portable media players and personal computers. Though the same content may also be made available by direct download or streaming, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added. Podcasting provides an alternative way to listen to radio and television broadcasts, music, lectures, announcements and other material. As long as subscribers listen to podcasts on their computer, special software other than the audio player (e.g., Windows Media Player or RealPlayer) that is already available on the computer is not required. People who wish to subscribe to a podcast feed must install "podcatcher" software such as iTunes on their computer. Podcasting takes its name from Apple's popular iPod line of products, but it isn't limited only to iPod owners and listeners.
