Online technology tools that enable Internet users to develop a customized, personal Web page that allows them to communicate with selected audiences via the Internet. Included are general tools that allow people to share news with friends and family; and specialized applications that are tailored to meet the needs of patients, people who are in the adoption process and others who want to share updates related to a time-limited event without having to deliver an ongoing series of individual messages. Most personal web page services allow the individual to post news and other information, create a photo gallery and share photos, receive messages from family and friends and communicate in other ways with people who have been given access to the site. Individuals who create the web page can choose the level of security that is needed and have the option of limiting access to visitors who have been approved in advance. The ability to create specialized web pages may be offered by organizations involved with the issue (e.g., hospitals or long-term care facilities in the case of patient web pages) in partnership with one of the companies that supports the tool; or may be accessed independently through the vendor’s own website.
