Taxonomy: Prescription Drug Use Disorders

A disorder that is characterized by use of drugs that are not medically necessary; use of prescription drugs for reasons other than to treat a defined medical condition; or continued use of drugs after their prescription has run out in spite of adverse health affects or social consequences. The three classes of prescription drugs that are most commonly misused are opiods which are prescribed to treat pain; central nervous system (CNS) depressants which are used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders; and stimulants which are prescribed to treat sleep disorder narcolepsy and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
