Individuals who are in the process of making a decision about whether to have a colostomy, are scheduled for or have had a colostomy and are in the process of recovering, possibly with the aid of radiation or other further forms of treatment, or who have had the procedure done in their past. A colostomy is the surgical creation of an opening of some portion of the colon onto the abdominal surface, usually as a result of a pathological condition which prevented passage of the feces through the colon. Temporary colostomies divert the fecal flow from the inflamed or operative area while tissues are given an opportunity to heal.
