Taxonomy: Multiple Personality Disorder

A disorder that is characterized by the existence within the individual of two or more distinct personalities, one of which is dominant at a particular time. Each personality is a fully integrated and complex unit with unique memories, behavior patterns and social relationships that determine the nature of the individual's acts when that personality is dominant. Transition from one personality to another is sudden and often associated with psychosocial stress. The original personality is usually unaware of the existence of the subpersonalities, though each of these is usually aware of the others in varying degrees.
