A disorder that is characterized by a sudden inability to recall important personal information that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness and which is not caused by an organic problem. The amnesia may be localized to a specific window of time; selective, allowing the patient to remember only small parts of events that took place in a defined period of time; generalized to the patient’s entire life; or systematized, i.e., the loss of memory is related to a specific category of information.
