A sleep disorder that is characterized by a persistent or recurring pattern of sleep disruption that results from altered function of the circadian timing system or from a mismatch between the individual's internal circadian sleep-wake system and external demands regarding the timing and duration of sleep. Included are delayed sleep phase disruptions where the person is unable to fall asleep and awaken at a desired earlier time; jet lag disruptions where sleepiness and alertness occur at an inappropriate time of day relative to the local time following travel across more than one time zone; and shift work disturbances which are characterized by insomnia which occurs during the major sleep period or excessive sleepiness during the major wake period that is associated with night shift work or frequently changing shift work hours.
