Programs that offer workshops or other forms of training that describe the basic principles of the strategic planning process and help participants understand how to use the process in their own organization. Traditionally, steps in the strategic planning process include development or reaffirmation of the organization's vision, mission and core values; identification of key stakeholders; an environmental assessment which identifies internal and external strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities; identification and prioritization of major issues and/or goals; identification of specific approaches or strategies that must be implemented to reach each goal; development of action plans required to implement each strategy; development of a written strategic plan which incorporates statements related to the above; development and authorization of a budget; and regular evaluation activities which enable staff to assess whether strategic goals are being met and to update the plan, as required.
