Steps in the process include developing bylaws and organizational resolutions and having them legally adopted by the organization, filing articles of incorporation as a nonprofit corporation with the appropriate state office, obtaining a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by filing a Form SS-4; preparing and submitting an application for tax-exempt status (IRS Form 1023 or 1024), and responding to additional requests for information by the IRS.
