Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups select and purchase equipment that can read text, forms and illustrations and translate them into electronic (digital) form. Scanned information can be stored in a file, displayed on a screen and manipulated by programs such as Adobe Photoshop, but unless an optical character recognition (OCR) system is included in the equipment, scanned text material cannot be edited. Scanners are distinguished based on the scanning technology they use, the resolution they can support, the color range they can reproduce and their size and shape.
