Libraries that maintain collections of books, periodicals and documents on the history, theory and criticism of the visual arts including fine arts, applied arts, design and architecture. Included may be artist books, monographs, journals, exhibition catalogs, auction sales catalogs, archival collections and other printed materials as well as slides, microform and videodisc collections. Art libraries are often affiliated with museums or educational institutions, and support the research needs of staff, faculty and students as well as the public.
