Programs that issue hurricane watches which alert the public to the possibility of hurricane conditions developing within 24 to 36 hours and/or hurricane warnings which warn the public that a hurricane is expected to make landfall within the next 24 hours or less. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones, formed in the atmosphere over warm ocean areas, in which wind speeds reach 74 miles per hour or more and blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center or "eye". Hurricane advisories may also include safety instructions for people who are in immediate peril.
