Programs that increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect lives and property before, during and after a tornado. Information about the community's warning system signaling that a tornado is imminent is covered. Included are programs that inspect the homes of individual residents and give them a report which recommends ways to enhance their safety and reduce the risk of property damage or loss, as well as those that deal with tornado safety in a more general way. Tornadoes are local atmospheric storms, generally of short duration, formed by winds rotating at very high speeds (sometimes in excess of 300 miles per hour), usually in a counter-clockwise direction. The vortex, up to several hundred yards wide, is visible to the observer as a whirlpool-like column of winds rotating about a hollow cavity or funnel.
