Programs that are staffed by specialists who have a broad medical education and general training in the diagnosis and management of eye disorders and conditions. General ophthalmologists are responsible for all aspects of eye health rather than specializing in subspecialties such as pediatric ophthalmology or neuro-ophthalmology; and provide an entry point for patients to receive refractions and glasses or contact lenses, screenings for asymptomatic eye diseases, diagnosis and treatment of most eye conditions, referral to specialists, and coordination with other aspects of medical care.
