Student health centers located on on near the campuses of institutions of higher learning that provide primary medical care, treatment services in emergency situations and ongoing support that helps students maintain a healthy lifestyle. The variety of healthcare services provided by any one institution can range from first aid stations employing a single nurse to large, accredited, multi-specialty ambulatory healthcare clinics with hundreds of employees including physicians, physician assistants, administrators, nurses, nurse practitioners, mental health professionals, health educators, athletic trainers, dietitians and nutritionists, and pharmacists; and may need to address the negative health impacts of drug and alcohol use disorders, mental illnesses such as depression and general anxiety disorders, intense stress, sleep disorders, intra-personal distress including concerns relating to body-image and self-esteem, eating disorders and sexually transmitted infections as well as other problems that may occur on campus (sexual assault and discrimination among others).
