Taxonomy: Television Programming Rating Systems

Programs that evaluate the content of television programming and assign ratings that provide advance information about the program's contents. The rating systems are concerned with programs that depict violence, sexual activity, or drug use; have sophisticated or mature themes; or use coarse, strong or profane language. Rating organizations also make a determination of the age ranges for which programs are appropriate. Also included are programs that develop rating systems that are used for this purpose.
