License plates for motor vehicles bearing a combination of letters and numbers and/or special background selected by the purchaser that are available at an additional cost to people registering a motor vehicle with state authorities. Included are "vanity" plates and special interest plates that have a special graphic design depicting an image related to particular interests, e.g., the environment. In some cases (e.g., Legion of Valor plates, Gold Star Family plates, Purple Heart Recipient plates), people may have to submit documentation to prove that they qualify.
