Taxonomy: Tax Collectors/Examiners

Individuals who ensure that federal, state and local governments obtain revenues from businesses and citizens by reviewing tax returns, conducting audits, identifying taxes payable, and collecting overdue tax dollars. Tax examiners review filed tax returns for accuracy, determine whether tax credits and deductions are allowed by law, note any adjustments that need to be made, and contact the taxpayer by mail or telephone to address discrepancies and request supporting documentation. They may notify the taxpayer of any overpayment or underpayment and either issue a refund or request further payment. Tax collectors also deal with delinquent accounts.
