Taxonomy: Cartographers

Individuals who collect, analyze and interpret geographic information provided by geodetic surveys, aerial photographs and satellite data; and research, study and prepare maps and other spatial data in digital or graphic form for legal, social, political, educational and design purposes. Cartographers may also design and evaluate algorithms, data structures and user interfaces for GIS and mapping systems. Included are photogrammetrists who measure and analyze aerial photographs that are subsequently used to prepare detailed maps and drawings; and mapping technicians who calculate mapmaking information from field notes, draw topographical maps and verify their accuracy.
