Taxonomy: Assyrian Community

Individuals who identify themselves as part of the Assyrian community through ethnic background, cultural ancestry and the Assyrian language. Assyrians are a non-Arab, Christian people who have had no nation state since the sixth century B.C.; and, historically have lived in several different countries including Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and the former Soviet Union. Most Assyrians remaining in the Middle East live in Iraq though many have been forced to flee the country due to persecution. Large numbers now live in North America, Australia and western Europe.
