Globoid cell leukodystrophy (hardening of the white matter of the brain) that is due to an accumulation of galactocerebrocide in the tissues. The disease usually affects infants who develop seizures, deafness, blindness, malnutrition, paralysis and marked mental deficiency. Survival beyond two years is rare.
