An acute illness and the most common cause of noninherited heart disease in children which begins with a high fever and cold-like symptoms followed by loss of appetite, general listlessness, a patchy rash, inflammation of the eyes, redness of the hands and feet and enlarged lymph nodes. Later, as the fever subsides, skin begins to peel from the fingers and toes. If untreated or caught late, the disease causes aneurysms in the blood vessels supplying the heart which can lead to fatal heart attacks.
