Programs that provide psychiatric evaluations for patients scheduled for any of a wide variety of surgical procedures to determine if there are issues that might impede a successful outcome for the individual. An accurate evaluation of mental health history, social support, pain coping skills and life expectation have all been shown to increase the likelihood of positive surgical outcomes. Evaluations are particularly common for extensive procedures like bariatric or gender reassignment surgeries; and some surgeons, hospitals and insurance companies require a surgical clearance from a practicing psychiatrist prior to approving the surgery.
