Programs that utilize a technique in which patients, either individually or in group sessions, use the visualization powers of their imagination in a focused way to prevent illness, boost the immune system and promote healing. Guided imagery is a form of daydreaming in which patients picture the sights, sounds, smells and touch of a setting such as a meadow or beach which they find relaxing and use the image as a means of getting in touch with their minds, bodies and spirits in a new way. In some cases, patients, once relaxed, are asked to focus on their problem or pain and develop imagery of the pain (e.g., a heavy weight on one's chest) and its easing (the removal of the weight).
