Programs that produce a series of x-ray images of the blood vessels following the injection of a radiopaque substance as a means of detecting abnormalities. Included are aortic angiograms which are used to detect the presence of aneurysms or tumors in the aorta; cardiac angiograms which are used to determine the size and shape of the cavities of the heart and the condition of the valves; coronary angiograms which study the coronary vessels of the heart and evaluate the adequacy of the blood supply to the myocardium; and cerebral angiograms which study the blood vessels of the brain. Angiograms can also be used to study the vessels of the extremities, the pulmonary vessels and the vertebrobasilar system and, with the use of a contrast medium and a fluoroscope, to evaluate arterial blood circulation.
