Programs that assist in filing applications by aliens who need to leave the United States and require appropriate documentation to reenter the country. Included are applications for advance parole required by aliens with pending petitions for immigration benefits or changes in nonimmigrant status; humanitarian parole required by aliens needing temporary admission to the U.S. for urgent humanitarian reasons (e.g., a medical emergency) or significant public benefit (e.g., to take part in legal proceedings); reentry permits required by lawful permanent residents (green card holders) who will be traveling for a year or more; and refugee travel documents required by people who are or once were refugees or asylees to return to the U.S. after travel abroad. Requests for advance parole, reentry permits and refugee travel documents should be made in advance. Humanitarian parole can only be requested for persons who are outside the U.S. and must be submitted to the overseas Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services district office having jurisdiction over the country in which the individual is currently residing.
