Taxonomy: Elder Abuse Medical Evaluations

Programs that utilize licensed medical professionals to conduct physical examinations and psycho-social assessments of older and dependent adults to determine whether there are physical injuries or other relevant findings that may indicate elder/dependent adult abuse. Physical signs include bruises, fractures, cuts, repeated injuries, untreated bedsores, unclean clothing, poor hygiene and unusual weight loss. Changes in the older person's behavior and emotional state such as agitation, withdrawal, anxiety or apathy may also suggest a problem. Evidence gathered during the evaluation process is carefully documented and may be used to respond to mandatory reporting laws, inform the provision of adult protective services and/or to support legal proceedings in an elder abuse case.
