Refuse, Recycling, Bulky Item Collection

Collects refuse twice a week, except on Christmas and New Year's Day. Provides information on refuse collection, curbside recycling, dead animal pick-up, bulky item pick-up, and excess green waste disposal. For collection/operations issues, please use the phone to get your answer more quickly -- call the collection yard servicing your area at the phone numbers provided above. Follow size and weight restrictions: 6 foot and 60 pound maximum for long items and bundles. For single-family homes, place items on the curbside fronting your property. Do not block sidewalks, driveways, drain inlets or roadways. Please note, City crews will not enter private property to retrieve bulky items scheduled for pick up. For multi-family units, items should be placed in common pick-up locations. Contact your resident or property manager to identify these locations. Only one appointment per address can be made per month except for Waikiki, where residents can make weekly appointments. Description and quantity of items is required. Only items scheduled for pick up will be collected. Single family homes are able to dispose of up to five (5) bulky waste items and two (2) metal appliances per separate appliance appointment. Each individual unit in multi-unit residential buildings are able to schedule up to five (5) bulky waste items for disposal and two (2) metal appliances per separate appliance appointment. AOAOs and property/resident managers may choose to schedule up to twenty (20) bulky items per collection and eight (8) metal appliances per separate metal appointment. Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch

Maui Recycling Group

Provides recorded messages regarding recycling programs available on all islands. Refers callers to various recycling groups, sites and programs. Coordinates Hawaii Materials Exchange which allows companies and individuals to list unwanted or extra materials and supplies that they will donate or trade. Maintains lists of needed materials and supplies. Encourages general public such as non-profit agencies to actively utilize the supply lists to meet their needs and reduce costs of obtaining new equipment. Input and retrieval accessible by modem.

Landfill, Transfer Stations and Convenience Centers

The City and County of Honolulu provides 10 public refuse drop-off locations: 6 convenience centers, 3 transfer stations and 1 landfill, around the island for residents to dispose of their household rubbish. Residents may use any of these locations free of charge. Maintains sites for disposal of ordinary household refuse. Convenience centers are reserved for residential waste material only, commercial or business refuse (from tree trimmers, roofers, plumbers, small stores, farmers, etc.) is strictly prohibited. Provides information on disposal of other wastes such as dead animals (Animal carcasses and waste products should be taken to City landfill), demolition, construction debris, asbestos or hazardous materials.

Conducts telephone book recycling for Hawaiian TelCom/Verizon during the distribution of new phone books. Pick up phone books of 400 or more at no cost.

Syringe Disposal Services

Animal Control - Lanai

Receives reports of dead dogs and cats on highways and other public areas. Arranges for disposal.

Wastewater Reclamation Division

Oversees the design and development of planned facilities. Monitors construction for waste water projects. Secures regulatory permits for projects. Assists the public in locating connection laterals. Operates, maintains and repairs county-owned waste water reclamation and pumping facilities.

Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden

(Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden) Cultivates and displays rare and unusual plants. Holds guided hikes, garden walks, special programs on Hawaiian plant use, and composting. Meeting rooms available for non-profit groups. Free Mulch given (while supplies last) at the following locations: Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden (Kaneohe), Hawaiian Earth Products (Kailua), Hawaiian Earth Products (Kapolei), Ala Wai Community Garden, Makiki Community Garden, Waimea Falls Park, Wahiawa Community Garden. Accepts volunteers who are able to work well with others and whose duties will include greeting visitors and giving tours.

Dead Animal Pick Up

Picks up small dead animals in metro Honolulu area (Foster Village to Hawaii Kai) such as dogs and cats, from City roads or if brought out into an open area.

Road Maintenance Division

Provides maintenance and repairs of City & County of Honolulu streets, storm drains, ditches, streams, and sidewalks. Provides litter containers at bus stops and pedestrian malls. Responsible for clearing City roadways and drainage ways of debris caused by rain, wind and other natural disasters. Picks up bulky items and dead animals in rural areas. Maintains striping and signs on City-Owned streets.
