Organized in 1979, the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society (HPGS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of Hawaii’s older adults. We promote the understanding of the aging process, supportive services, and legislation that help people age with dignity and grace. It is the largest voluntary, multidisciplinary group in the State committed to dialogue and discussion, networking and information sharing on issues and policies affecting older adults in this geographical area. Currently, more than 400 older adults, caregivers, gerontology educators, medical and social service practitioners, health care providers, agency personnel and organizations from all sectors of the community make up the membership. Members can attend the meetings held three times a year.

Provides public information about services, programs and policies on the aging. Administers federal and state monies for community based care. Advocates for and coordinates programs, services and policies for older adults and their families. Develops solutions related to elder rights. Provides consumer education regarding the locations, appropriate facilities understanding levels of care and qualification requirements for various payment sources. Advocates for improved quality and accesibility of long term care.

Sponsors/supports legislation, rules and regulations beneficial to federal employees and retirees. Advises about rights under retirement laws and regulations. Promotes the general welfare of active employees and retired persons and assists survivors in processing of death benefits. Assists with all types of annuity and health benifit problems. Now accepts Federal Employees as members.

The Maui Strong program delivers bagged groceries and essential supplies to kupuna who were displaced or otherwise impacted by the Maui wildfires. Deliveries are made directly to their homes by volunteer drivers. For safety and privacy, drivers do not enter the kupuna’s homes. In addition to home deliveries, the program provides care navigation services to help connect kupuna with resources and support. We also offer transportation services for those who need transportation to medical appointments or essential errands.

(Hele on Kakoo Paratransit Services) Hawai'i County Mass Transit Agency (MTA) offers Hele-On Kako'o Paratransit services to complement its current Intra-Hilo and Intra-Kona fixed route bus system. It is an advanced reservation, origin to destination service for persons with a disability who are unable to use the regular fixed Hele-On bus service.

Provides both escort service and home visitation. Escorts the frail elderly to doctors, hospitals, banks, pharmacy. Arranges home visits to assess needs, provide information and referrals that facilitate access to community resources.

Na Hoaloha volunteers provides round-trip transportation for older adults or people with a disability for needed medical appointments, procedures, grocery shopping, or medications retrievals. Na Hoaloha provides help to those who are home bound and have no access to other forms of transportation. 10 day advanced notice requested.

Island-wide (Oahu only), curb-to-curb, and door-to-door transportation services for persons 60 years old or older to go to medical appointments, benefit appointments, group excursions, group and individual shopping, as well as other types of trips that enable independent living. The program uses vans with wheelchair lifts, ramps and sedans.

Provides short and long-term nursing care for elderly and handicapped persons at a reasonable cost. Provides 68 bed secured Alzheimer units and respite services. Offers full range of social, emotional, spiritual and physical activities and transportation. Offers physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy six days a week.

Temporary 24-hour care for older adults of all ethnicities to offer care providers an opportunity to take a break from the rigors of care giving responsibilities. Respite Care is provided on a first-come, space-available basis. There is no guarantee that a bed may be reserved for a specific timeframe. (Alzheimers Related Disease Respite) Provides respite care for persons with Alzheimer's disease, stroke and other related disabilities. May accept incontinent patients. Does not administer medications. All involved people bring their own lunch.

(Hiolani Care Center at Kahala Nui) Kahala Nui is a not-for-profit organization. Hi'olani Care Center at Kahala Nui provides compassionate, person-centered care through assisted living, memory support, and comprehensive nursing. Hi'olani provides thoughtful, gracious support for everyday living with quality, around-the clock medical care in an attractive island-style setting.

Provides assistance for seniors and caregivers with finding the right services to assist with challenges and identifying the right support systems. Waikiki Community Center has two Senior Resource Coordinators: Trish Lowry and Crystal Antonio. Trish and Crystal are available for appointments Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 2:30 pm. The ADRC staff members provide Options Counseling. It's a process that assists you to make informed decisions to select the long term services and support you need to age well and maintain independence. The ADRC is for people of all incomes and ages, to help you make plans that carry out your individual needs and preferences. It is also a point of access for all publically funded long term support programs and benefits. ADRC is operated by the State of Hawaii in cooperation with the four county governments. Anyone who wants to explore their options for long term support and services, or for help to family caregivers, may also use the ADRC website to search an online database for options, or to request the ADRC staff to contact them.
