Adult Literacy Program

Family Literacy Libraries Program

Offers family literacy programs to residents of housing projects Mayor Wright Homes (MWH) and Kuhio Park Towers (KPT) in Kalihi. Also offers family libraries, Saturday story hours, and age-appropriate activities for children, and free twice weekly English and computer classes for adults in public housing.

Kona Literacy Center

Offers one-on-one tutoring for adults who are fluent in English and want to improve their reading and writing skills. Computer-assisted learning and technology access. Drop in help for low-literacy adults to read or complete forms or letters. (Legal or financial advice can not be given) Future ELL classes will resume in 2017.

Read To Me International

Read To Me International promotes reading aloud as a means to raising children who love and value reading. It bases its mission, "To share the love and joy of reading aloud," on research and best practices through the following activities: presentations and workshops to parents, educators, and caregivers; book fairs; biennial read-aloud conferences featuring authors and illustrators; prison literacy; programs for mothers, including one for those living in transitional housing; and special events, including reading to children in schools, preschools, and service organizations. Read To Me International Foundation is devoted to improving children's literacy. Its mission is to promote the love and joy of reading aloud to children. Read To Me educates the public about the importance of reading aloud to children through multi-media, ads, newsletters, website, presentations for parents at schools and preschools, social media and public service announcements.

Always Reading

The Always Reading program works with partner schools to provide families of Pre-K and K students with a tablet, unlimited access to a digital children’s library featuring 40,000 diverse titles, gifted hard-copy books for their home libraries throughout the year, and a book coach. Students take the tablet home and our book coaches work with the families via text message to support and empower families to build strong reading routines in the home. Families keep the tablets once the program is complete.
