Housing Assistance Program

(HAP) The Housing Assistance Program (HAP) serves senior adults, aged 60 years or older, who need housing counseling and assistance to find affordable housing. Priority is given to those with the greatest economic and social needs and those facing homelessness. HAP helps to improve and maintain their self-sufficiency and remain in the community by increasing their accessibility to affordable and supported housing and by empowering them to make difficult life transitions. The program provides housing counseling and linkages to housing resources, assistance to remain on housing wait lists, updates of the Oahu Housing Guide list/database, and education and advocacy to promote the development of new affordable, supportive, well-designed rental housing. Manages public hunting areas, public hiking areas, forest reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves. Accepts reports of forest pests, including new and unusual weeds and certain birds. Pest reports accepted include: wild pigs, snakes, large lizards, ferrets, the banana poka (a weed), the bulbul (a bird) on neighbor islands, and the mongoose on Kauai.

Kupuna Support Program

Offers a place for frail and not-so-frail seniors to gather and socialize with others. Program targets isolated seniors who are alone during the day and are in need of mental and physical stimulation to maintain their current level of functioning, thus delaying the need for more supportive care. This is a day activities program for the elderly. The focus is on healthy aging through intervention in the mental and social decline of seniors. Activities are age- and level-of-functioning appropriate and include chair exercise, arts and crafts, socialization, singing and games that challenge them.
