Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Temporary Assistance for Other Needy

(TANF, TAONF) The federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program provides temporary cash assistance to eligible families. The monthly cash assistance given to families may be used to pay for food, clothing, housing and utility expenses, and other daily needs. Eligible families include at least one specified relative adult and a minor dependent child who resides in the same home. In addition, family members must be US citizens. The State of Hawaii Temporary Assistance for Other Needy Families (TAONF) Program provides the same benefits and services to Hawaii’s vulnerable families with children as the TANF program. The TAONF program eligibility includes mixed citizens and non-citizens, and single- and two-parent households. Our Lady of Keaau Spiritual Retreat Center

(Our Lady of Kea'au Spiritual Retreat Center) This is a retreat center located along 58 acres of the Waianae Coast, available to nonprofits for community and business meetings, conferences, and celebrations. Guests have access to furnished cabins, an outdoor kitchen, dining facilities, tennis courts, a swimming pool and open fields. As an extension of service to the community, Our Lady of Kea`au also prepares and serves meals for the homeless in the Waianae area. It also maintains a Christian homeless tent community on the premises.

Incorporating a community family center model, Hale Ho'omalu Neighborhood Place provides a healing and nurturing environment in which intervention services are interwoven with prevention activities. Services include information and referral, emergency food pantry, emergency clothes closet, parent skills classes, outreach activities to engage hard to reach families, individual and family counseling, and community activities, volunteer training, SNAP (Food Stamp) application assistance, and cultural awareness activities and more. Hale Ho'omalu is a family support center provided by Child and Family Service, serving Central to East Kauai.

Emergency Agricultural Loan for Those Impacted By COVID-19

Eligible farmers may now apply for emergency loans of up to $150,000 at 3 percent interest. Loans of $100,000 or less will not require credit denials from other financial institutions. The [Hawai'i Board of Agriculture] also waived the three-year residency requirements normally required for agricultural loans, and authorized state loan officers to modify or waive collateral requirements, as deemed necessary, on a case-by-case basis. Loan applications for emergency loans relating to COVID-19 will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2020. Besides emergency loans, HDOA also offers micro-loans for those needing loans of $25,000 or less. Micro-loans involve less paperwork and swifter processing. In addition, current agricultural loan holders who are suffering financially due to COVID-19 may also request payment relief or forbearance.

Uses "mass-construction" techniques. Takes 6 - 12 months to build the houses.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The HUD Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly the Section 8 Program) is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program. A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family's choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program.
