The purpose of the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is to enable eligible families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. Kauai County Housing Agency's (KCHA) FSS program is the conduit between the client and the appropriate supportive services necessary to achieve independence. FSS case managers are assigned to FSS participants to make a proper assessment of strengths, needs and aspirations. The case manger will guide each client through a service plan which outlines short and long-term goals. Some of the services provided to families include: child care, transportation necessary to receive services, remedial education, job training and preparation, substance abuse treatment and counseling, training in homemaking and parenting skills, training in money management, training in household management; and any other services and resources appropriate to assist eligible families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. The Community Assistance Center provides community group therapy for sex offenders.

Three meals per day are prepared at our Sumner Men’s Shelter and served across our 10-shelter network. Help prepare and serve meals at the men’s shelter. This volunteer position is great for individuals or groups, as each shift accommodates up to 5 volunteers. Shifts are available 3 meals per day, 7 days per week.

Provides sexual trauma counseling for veterans who were sexually harassed or sexually assaulted while on active duty in the military. Provides individual and group counseling, benefits information, employment counseling and referrals for other VA services.

Provides free information on legal topics such as estate planning, family law, employment and insurance issues. Uses volunteer attorneys to answer calls.

Conducts surveillance and investigation of communicable diseases (other than tuberculosis, Hansen's Disease). Implements control measures necessary to decrease and prevent infectious disease. Provides information to the public about infectious diseases, travel information, immunization and general information on vaccination for childhood diseases. Also provides a patient referral letter for a free (STDs) chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis test.

Provides individual, group, marriage and family counseling. Offers information and referral service for parents, families, and individuals. Operates family and personal enrichment programs, family advocacy program and new parent support group. Offers relocation assistance: pre + post move assistance. New arrivals orientation, temporary loan of basic household items. Offers Employment Assistance: job listings and referrals, employment and personal workshops, resumes. Offers Volunteer Opportunities: Exceptional Family Member Program for special needs family members. Personal Financial Management Program: budget counseling investment strategies. Retired Activities Program: provides assistance and information to military retirees and their families.

Provides a national toll-free phone line to answer commonly asked questions on postal service, such as service hours, zip code and address information, and mailing rates. A caller attempting to reach a postal worker in Hawaii, or who asks a question that cannot be answered by Mainland operators, will be given a local number to call. Also provides U.S. Passports and voter ballot forms also available at several Post Office locations.

Maintains information resources, i.e. books, magazines, musical recordings, video and audio tapes, State and County government documents and Hawaiiana materials. Inspects and certifies grade, quality and condition of agriculture products such as fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, foliage, shell eggs, animal feed, coffee, nuts and processed food products. (ATV, Alternatives to Violence) Professional counselors on call to help youth who are in psychiatric crisis or to supplement the efforts of their caregivers. Counselors can refer clients to specialized, short-term, out-of-home placement when needed. Youth Services groups are offered in both East and West Hawaii to both boys and girls ages 12 years old - 17 years old who are deemed perpetrators of harm. The focus of this group is to offer tools for reducing impulsive behaviors, improving self esteem and increasing the level of social competence as well as addressing the dynamics of adolescent victimization. The Youth Service groups are 20 weeks long and group is once per week; however, times and days of group may vary by location.

Provides shelter for persons who are homeless and who are willing to abide by house rules (including, but not limited to: no drugs, no alcohol, no violence) for a maximum of six weeks. Stays up to six weeks include mandatory attendance at life skills training. Residence beyond six weeks includes vocational and educational referrals and assistance. Requires clients to be actively engaged in improving their situation with the goal of moving back into the community. Has 40 studio and 32 two-bedroom units with kitchen and bath; separate dormitories for single women and single men; day care center; primary care medical clinic, laundry facilities and common dining hall. Can accommodate 310 persons.
