Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities seeks to use the public humanities to nurture the joy of learning, and inspire community and civic engagement. We aim to bring the humanities to hard-to-reach and nontraditional audiences across the state. Our goal is to improve the quality of life in Hawai‘i through public programs that apply the humanities to everyday lives to help strengthen communities and encourage civic dialogue. We provide grants in support of public humanities projects that: 1. Use humanities areas of study (philosophy, history, literary studies, etc.) to further community understanding of local, national, and world history, diverse cultural traditions and ethical issues (humanities public program grants). 2. Develops new (research grants) or further public access to (preservation and publication grants) humanities resources. Maintains a statewide network of local support groups made up of parents/caregivers whose children have emotional, mental or behavioral challenges. (IOP, Safe Haven Intensive Outpatient Program - Oahu) Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) service persons with mental health illness and drug/alcohol problems. Services are voluntary and conducted in groups.

(Crisis Mobile Outreach) Professional counselors on call to help youth who are in psychiatric crisis or to supplement the efforts of their caregivers. Counselors can refer clients to specialized, short-term, out-of-home placement when needed. Provides face to face assessment of a crisis situation and arrange appropriate course of action for adolescents.

Friends of the Library of Hawai'i (FLH) exists to promote and support the fifty public libraries that make up the Hawai'i State Public Library System. FLH promotes literacy, education, and library services. The organization supports librarians in continuing education opportunities and offers scholarships for graduate students at the University of Hawaii interested in a library career. FLH fundraises throughout the year through a number of book sales as well as a golf tournament. Volunteers are needed for events and for year-round sorting and pricing of books and media. (VISTA, Volunteer in Service to America) Volunteers can serve as a VISTA, a VISTA leader, or a VISTA summer associate. AmeriCorps VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full time for one-year terms. Leaders work to expand and build the capacity of individual AmeriCorps VISTA members and their service sites. AmeriCorps VISTA Leaders have previously served a full term of full-time service with any AmeriCorps program or with Peace Corps, and have demonstrated exemplary skills and leadership in community service. The AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate program offers individuals the opportunity to become engaged in a community through an existing AmeriCorps VISTA project for 8, 9, or 10 weeks during the summer.
