Operates three core divisions: Fisheries Habitat (Environmental) Protection, Recreational Fisheries, and Commercial Fisheries and Aquaculture. Establishes and manages statewide system of Marine Life Conservation Districts (marine preserves). Monitors harvest of ornamental fisheries for use in aquariums or offered for sale through pet shops. Provides technical guidance on probable impacts to fish, projects, project developers and permitting authorities. Provides public information on fishing and Hawaii's marine life. Accepts reports of any aquatic animal in fresh or salt water.

Each year, Hawai‘i Opera Theatre produces an opera specifically designed to take “on tour” to schools all around the state. In addition to being a great experience with music and drama, this show can also be used to enhance curriculum. Themes are relevant to social studies, language arts, math and more. This production is recommended for grade level K-8 and family audiences but has also been successful with middle and high school audiences as well. Cost per performance is $325 with the recommended audience size of 200 students per performance. The production uses live music accompaniment. (Four-H Youth Program - Hilo) Assists youth in acquiring knowledge and life skills, and becoming self-directed, productive and contributing members of society. Through active, experimental learning, teaches science, communication, leadership, citizenship, health, safety, and nutrition. Teaches literacy using television program, "Ghostwriters". Sponsors KAMP (Kindergartners Are Most Precious), designed to promote school readiness, success which is designed to promote school readiness and parent-child interaction, and a "Youth At Risk" educational theater project.

Kipuka o ke Ola is dedicated to a healthy community in which to live, work and raise strong families. We support this vision by collaborating to improve the health status with programs including: Get Fit Hawaii, North Hawaii Drug Free Coalition and Lifeplan Institute Hawaii Island. We encourage a blended model of health and healing that includes mind, body, spirit, nature and community. Our focus is on three districts of north Hawaii Island: North Kohala, South Kohala and Hamakua but collaborate island-wide.

Enforces Hawaii child labor law relating to employment of minors under 18 years of age. Provides information on obtaining work permits.

Conducts investigations of workplace catastrophes or fatalities and employee complaints regarding workplace hazards. Provides consultation to employers and training to employers and employees to encourage voluntary compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Law standards and rules. Inspects boilers, pressure systems, amusement rides, elevators and similar equipment.

(H-HEAP, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program - Energy Credit - Leeward, LIHEAP, LIHEAP EC) Hawaii Home Energy Assistance Program (H-HEAP) Energy Credit (EC) is designed to help families keep their utilities (gas or electric) on. H-HEAP primarily assists households by applying an energy assistance grant directly to the energy provider on behalf of the eligible household through the Energy Credit (EC). Applications are accepted during the month of June only. Applications available online or in the office. Credit amount varies by household. The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides crucial food and nutritional support to qualifying low-income and needy households, and those making the transition from welfare to self-sufficiency. The SNAP processing center provides public assistance, food stamps (SNAP) and financial assistance, to eligible individuals and families. They handle new applications and ongoing assistance. Plans, implements and stages the statewide celebration to honor memory of King Kamehameha the Great and his accomplishments. Celebration includes parades, cultural programs, Ho'olaule'a, hula competitions. Events staged each June.

Maintains a botanical garden with varieties of plants that conserve water. Tour also includes information on water-saving irrigation systems, mulches, and other xeriscape ideas. Group tours are available by appointment only. Honolulu Board of Water Supply and Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden offer educational workshops that feature xeriscape plants and gardening techniques that will help to conserve water outdoors.
