(Ho'oulu 'Aina and Returning to our Roots) Hooulu Aina (the Kalihi Valley Nature Preserve) strives to be a "welcoming place of refuge for people of all cultures." Kokua Kalihi Valley (KKV) sees the aina (land) as a vital member of the community, and so we are pleased to offer opportunities for community gardening, reforestation, environmental education and the preservation of land-based cultural knowledge. The ROOTS program works to reconnect community members to one another, to their cultures, and to their shared land through the growing, preparing and sharing of food. Each year, Hawai‘i Opera Theatre produces an opera specifically designed to take “on tour” to schools all around the state. In addition to being a great experience with music and drama, this show can also be used to enhance curriculum. Themes are relevant to social studies, language arts, math and more. This production is recommended for grade level K-8 and family audiences but has also been successful with middle and high school audiences as well. Cost per performance is $325 with the recommended audience size of 200 students per performance. The production uses live music accompaniment. (Hawaii County Third Circuit Hale Kaulike Self Help Center) The Hilo Court Self-Help Center will provide legal help to the East Hawaii community on a pilot basis. Volunteer attorneys from the Hawaii County Bar Association will provide limited legal information by telephone in areas such as landlord-tenant, family, and other district court matters.

Fights fires. Dispatches emergency ocean rescues. Responds to hazardous materials contamination and spills. Provides medical assistance as trained first responders. Conducts station house tours and fire prevention education. Administers blood pressure testing. Conducts school inspections and commercial occupancy inspections.

Responsible for fire protection, rescue, HazMat, emergency medical response and ocean rescue services. Provides fire prevention education. Dispatches fire fighters and rescue squad personnel for emergencies. Issues firework permits. Blood pressure screening is offered at all Kauai Fire Stations except at the Kauai Fire Department administration office.

Provides outpatient medical care including diagnosis and treatment of illness/injuries, ob-gyn and physical exams. Offers urgent care after regular office hours. Provides lab tests and x-rays.
