Eligibility

US citizens or legal residents, who are 65 or older, who have not seen an ophthalmologist (an Eye MD) in three or more years. Those who are enrolled in a HMO or receive eye care benefits through the VA are not eligible.

Fees

Medicare and private health insurance are billed if available. Physicians accept insurance reimbursement as payment in full resulting in no out-of-pocket cost for the physician's services. If uninsured, there is no charge.

Service area

Callers who meet the eligibility requirements are mailed the name of an ophthalmologist participating near their home. Participating physicians provide a comprehensive, medical eye exam and care for anything diagnosed at the initial visit for up to one year at no out-of-pocket cost for the physician's services. Eyeglasses, prescriptions, and hospital services are not covered under the program.

EyeCare America provides eye care through our volunteer ophthalmologists. Since 1985, we have helped more than 2.2 million seniors and those at increased risk of glaucoma access eyecare and resources. Ninety percent of the care provided is at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
