The Hawaii Fire Department is primarily responsible for fire protection and suppression, pre-hospital emergency medical services, land and sea search and rescue, hazardous materials response, ocean safety, and fire prevention and public education for the County of Hawaii. The Fire Prevention bureau provides building plans review, public education. Issues permits for: use of tents and temporary structures, to burn fireworks or Christmas trees, the application of flammable finishes, all fuel tank installations, storage, use and handling of flammable, combustible, toxic, corrosive and other hazardous gases, solids and liquid material; installation and maintenance of automatic and manual fire alarm systems and fire extinguishing equipment; building maintenance inspections, and regulation of fire escapes.
